DRIVING REGULATIONS IN PORTUGAL

European citizens are allowed to drive with their domestic driving licence for up to 6 months whilst non-European citizens need an International Driving permit. Your driving licence, an Identity Card or passport, insurance papers, the vehicle registration and (if you live in Portugal) the current road tax stamp have to be carried whenever you are using your vehicle. After a stay in Portugal of over 6 months you will need to change the registration of your car.

The minimum age for driving in Portugal is 17 years, seatbelts are compulsory in the front and rear (children under the age of twelve are not allowed in the front) and the alcohol limit is 0.05 %. Over 0.12 % will get you arrested.

Speed limits in Portugal are as followed (unless a traffic sign indicates otherwise):

Motorways: 120 km/h
Towns: 50 km/h
Major Roads: 100 km/h
