FINDING A JOB IN PORTUGAL

Finding a job in Portugal will be much easier if you have an understanding of the language and get your qualifications translated into the EU equivalents by the national Academic Recognition Centre.

The internet provides an excellent tool to search for potential employers or vacancies. There are also a number of employment agencies where you can submit your CV on line. Once you are based here you can make use of the Portuguese Employment Service (Centro de Emprego) which is a government agency advertising jobs, training courses available, etc.

If you are looking for seasonal or casual work then the general rule is to turn up and ask around in the tourist areas. Finding a permanent job is not quite so easy and is likely to take some time. If there is a trade or professional association that covers you area of expertise they may be able to help you with some contacts. Scour the national and local press and make sure that you submit your details quickly if you see a likely opportunity. It is important that you reappraise your skills, and if you do not speak Portuguese it might be advisable to work with tourists and other expatriates. And it is unlikely that you will be able to start at a similar employment level to where you were in the UK.
