GETTING A VISA FOR PORTUGAL

Austria, Denmark, Finland, Belgium, Germany, France, Greece, Iceland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Luxembourg are countries which belong to the "Schengen" area, which means that there are no visas required to enter Portugal. In general all citizens of those 15 countries (including Portugal itself) can travel freely within the borders and only need an ID or passport.

Those who are not from any of the counties above do require a visa. A Schengen visa is separated into three different types: Airport Transit, Transit and Short stay visa (for visits up to 3 months). It allows visitors to travel within the borders of the 15 countries. A long stay visa is required for stays of over three months.

If you want to live and/or work in Portugal a residence visa will be required. The Autorizacao de Residencia is a green and red card with the applicant's photo. Applications can be made at the Portuguese consulate in your home city or during a stay in the country. A copy of your passport, a photo, a medical certificate, and evidence that you will not be a burden to the Portuguese government, which means that you will need to have adequate funds, and some kind of housing.
