JOBS IN PORTUGAL

A major change has occurred in the job market since the mid 1990s when the agricultural sector accounted for nearly a third of the work force. This figure now stands at just 5% with workers mainly in the services sector which has over 55% of the employment market.

Many of the jobs in the business and industry sector in Portugal require a working knowledge of or fluent Portuguese, but English speaking jobs can be found with tour operators, hotels, bars and restaurants in the Algarve Region and the tourist resorts of Albufeira, Alvor, Carvoeiro, Lagos Praia da Rocha and Vilamoura.

The cities of Lisbon, Oporto, Portimao and Faro offer opportunities for English speaking teachers for kindergartens and infant schools.

Almost two thirds of Portuguese women are in employment and 85% have full time jobs. This high percentage of female employment creates vacancies for au pairs which require experience in child care: but you do not always have to speak Portuguese. They are usually live in jobs which require you to look after the children and carry out domestic duties. The wages are often low but remember that your accommodation costs are paid for.

There is a lot of voluntary work available with the elderly or disabled.
