LANGUAGE IN PORTUGAL

Portuguese is the sixth major language in the world. It is spoken not only Portugal but also in Brazil, Angola, some Asian nations, Mozambique Cape Verde and other African countries.

It is also the second most spoken Latin language. 186 million people in South America (over 210 million globally) have Portuguese as their mother tongue - which is more than those who speak Spanish. In Portugal itself are over 10 million, in Africa approximately 5 million and in the US at least 500.000.

A very common nickname for Portuguese is "The language of Camões" - who was a famous author and poet. It was during the 15th and 16th century that Portugal set up an immense colonial empire and numerous Portuguese based Creole languages appeared.

Despite the fact that the Portuguese and the Spanish languages are very similar in grammar, vocabulary and orthography there are still significant differences between them. However, a conversation between people from both countries is possible.
