POLITICS IN PORTUGAL

The Government is dominated by two political parties, the PS is a Social Democratic Party similar the UK's Labour Party or Germany's SPD, and the PSD Conservative Party. Both have pro European politics and focus on market economy. During the February 2005 elections the Socialist Party received an overwhelming majority for the new Prime Minister, Jose Socrates.

Other small parties with seats are the Portuguese Communist Party, the People's Party, the Left Wing Bloc and the Green Party. The Communist and the Greens are joined together and called the Unitarian Democratic Coalition.
