PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN PORTUGAL

The public transport in major cities such as Lisbon, Porto, Amadora and Braga is excellent. Lisbon provides numerous taxis, trains and buses which take locals and visitors to nearly everywhere in the city.

Taxis are the easiest but not necessarily cheapest choice to reach your destination - even though they are cheaper than in other countries. It is important to make sure that the meter is switched on so that you can check how much it will cost you. It also helps to have a rough idea on where your destination is to ensure that you are not taken on a tour through the whole city. A 10 % tip is appropriate.

Buses are a much cheaper method of transportation. Destinations are shown on the front window of the bus and tickets can be bought from the bus driver (they normally do not speak English). Tickets have to be punched by a machine in the bus.

The third way of travelling is the train or "Linha de Cascais". It runs along the coast from Lisbon to Cascais, and is perfect if you want to make a round trip. Tickets have to be bought before getting on the train.
