UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFIT IN PORTUGAL
Portugal offers unemployment protection to workers who are covered by the general social security scheme and reside there, co-operative workers not covered by the scheme for self employed people who are out of work for reasons beyond their control and former invalidity pensioners who have been assessed as capable of work. They also offer benefits which compensate workers for lack or reduction of earnings by their acceptance of part time work. There are three types of unemployment benefit.
You must meet the following criteria to quality for unemployment benefit:
- be in possession of a work contract or similar agreement
- domestic workers should have paid contributions to the social security system based on effective earnings
- be totally unemployed
- be voluntarily unemployed
- be capable and available for work
- be registered as a job seeker with the local Employment Centre
- to have worked for at least 540 days with registered earnings within the 24 months immediately prior to the date of unemployment
Unemployment Social Benefit is offered to individuals who:
- have completed at least 180 days employment within the 12 months immediately prior to the date of unemployment
- have not completed the qualifying period required for unemployment benefit in case of initial unemployment social benefit
- have a monthly income per person which does not exceed 80% of the national minimum salary (NMS)
Partial Unemployment Benefit is paid when:
- you are in receipt of employment benefit
- you have accepted a part time labour contract
- your part time work earnings must be lower than your unemployment benefit
- the weekly number of hours of part time work must be above 20% and below 75% of the normal working time
